The Alzheimer Society of Durham Region is readying for its annual IG Wealth Management Walk for Alzheimer’s later this month.
It takes place on Sunday, May 26 at the Oshawa Centre, with registration beginning at 8 a.m., and the walk starting just after 9 a.m.
The Society invites all community members to take part in the annual walk in support of families, friends and neighbours living with or caring for someone with Alzheimer’s disease or another form of dementia.
Last year, more than 300 Durham Region residents participated in the walk, raising more than $80,000.
Organizers state funds raised through the event help meet the growing demand for the services that are a “lifeline” for many residents affected by the condition.
All monies raised are invested in a broad range of programs and services available. “Offered at little to no cost, these programs enhance the health and well-being of people with dementia and their families, from diagnosis to end of life, and provide education and guidance to help people reduce their risk of dementia and maintain brain health,” a media release states.
“We are seeing an increase in families seeking our help and services. Due to the extraordinary support from our community at events such as this, we are able to provide education and support to those living with dementia, their care partners, health and social service professionals and the general public,” says Denyse Newton, executive director at the Alzheimer Society of Durham Region.
The Alzheimer Society of Durham Region is partnering with IG Wealth Management for the second year as the national title sponsor for the walk.
“The Oshawa/Whitby IG Wealth Management office is proud to join the Alzheimer’s Society of Durham Region at the annual Walk for Alzheimer’s to help raise awareness and funds to make a difference for the nearly 10,000 people living with dementia and their care partners in Durham Region,” states Stephen Butchard, regional director at IG Wealth Management.
Participants can register online individually or make an even bigger impact by joining a corporate team or creating a team with family and friends.
