The UOIT women’s basketball team is beginning to take shape as the Ridgebacks announced their first official signing, Jade Lyons.
A 5’10 power forward from Ottawa, Lyons brings with her a scoring prowess that excites Ridgebacks head coach Christa Eniojukan.
“Jade is such a versatile scorer with an inside-out game,” says Eniojukan. “It’s exciting when a player can bring the kind of offensive ability Jade has and combine it with an outstanding work ethic and competitive fire.”
Along with her scoring ability, Lyons brings leadership as a co-captain with Canada Topflight Academy (CTA) in her second season with the program.
Previous to joining CTA during the 2017-18 season, Lyons won silver with the Nepean Blue Devils in 2016-17, and enjoyed five seasons of success with the Naismith Gaels from 2011-2016.
Recent highlights for Lyons include being named a 2017 Ottawa high school all-star, earning a nomination for the 2017 outstanding junior female athlete of the year award, and scoring 29 points in a bronze medal upset at the 2016 provincial championship.
“It’s really exciting to be one of the first to commit,” said Lyons. “From what I’ve heard all the athletes here at UOIT are really connected, so I feel like the energy is going to be really nice here, having a full crowd with everyone cheering us on.”
Lyons will graduate from Immaculata High School this spring having been an honour roll student during all four years of her high school career. This fall she will enter UOIT’s criminology and justice studies program, alongside the concurrent education program.
UOIT also recently signed its second player, an Oshawa native named Jolesha Allen.
“I’m very excited,” said Allen during her signing at the Campus Recreation and Wellness Centre with the Ridgebacks program. “It’s been a dream of mine to play at a university and I think I can leave a legacy here, doing my best and being my best every day, in order to be the best student-athlete I can be.”
She is a shooting guard currently playing in her second season with Durham Elite.
