Ridgebacks’ hockey adds some Power

Bradley Power of St. John’s, Nfld. is the latest addition to the UOIT men’s hockey squad.

The 21-year-old comes to Oshawa from the Corpus Christi IceRays of the North American Hockey League. Joining Tucker White, Power is the second member of the Texas-based hockey club to join the Ridgebacks recruiting class leading into the 2017-18 Ontario University Athletics season.

“Brad will be another nice addition to our program,” said head coach Curtis Hodgins. “He is a solid all-around player who will contribute on both sides of the puck for us, and is also a player who has been able to produce offensively on every team he has played for.”

Power is a 5’11 forward who plays at left wing and carries several years of experience in junior hockey with him. He has spent the last two seasons in Corpus Christi where he racked up 83 points in 112 career games.

Prior to heading south of the border, he spent a season in Prince Edward Island with the Summerside Western Capitals of the Maritime Hockey League. He had a dominant offensive campaign there with 28 goals and 30 assists in 48 games. In 2013, he was a 14th round selection in the QMJHL Entry Draft by the Moncton Wildcats.

“Brad had lots of interest from NCAA and U SPORTS schools and we are fortunate he has chosen to become a Ridgeback,” said Hodgins. “His coaches and teammates from Corpus Christi rave about the type of character and personality he will bring to our team.”

While in Corpus Christi, Power earned the Community Man of the Year award since he was always happy to jump in on team-organized community events. The team created another award in his honour – the Brad Power Award, meant to spotlight community work done above and beyond what is provided by the team.
