You vs. us narrative is hurtful

Dear Editor,

As a Canadian and as an immigrant, hearing the words “you people” is quite hurtful.

As an Ahmadi Muslim, I have been taught from a young age that “love for country is part of faith” and I proudly wear a poppy every November.

Furthermore, to foster the spirit of Remembrance Day within the members of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community, poppies are sold in local mosques across Canada.

A “Muslims for Remembrance Day” campaign has also been launched since 2011 where old and new immigrants actively take part and show their support for our veterans.

The notion of “you vs us” is what divides us and I hope Don Cherry can see that us immigrants are just as Canadian as him.
