UPDATE: Woman dies in Oshawa fire

An Oshawa man is suspected of killing his mother in a fire at a Nonquon Road apartment on Mother’s Day.

Oshawa Fire Service received a call of smoke coming from the apartment at 119 Nonquon Road near Taunton Road at around 7 p.m.

According to police, firefighters found Yvonne Mooney, 83, in a bedroom without vital signs.

She was later transported to hospital in a life-threatening state and was pronounced dead.

Homicide investigators were called to the scene and later arrested a 56-year-old Timothy Mooney and charged him in connection to the death.

This is the fifth homicide in Durham Region in 2019.
