One man from Oshawa is facing a series of charges after being arrested for starting a fire that caused serious damage to an Ajax Canadian Tire.
On March 14 at around 8 a.m., officers were called to a fire that had started in a storage unit adjacent to the Canadian Tire store at Kingston Road and Salem Road in Ajax. Several employees were inside preparing to open the store when the fire broke out. The blaze caused over $500,000 in damage, but thankfully nobody was injured.
The suspect fled the scene in a taxi, and after arriving in Scarborough, left the taxi without paying. Toronto police located and arrested the man in a residential backyard in the area of Meadowvale Avenue and Ellesmere Road.
The 34-year-old Oshawa man is charged with arson causing damage to property, fraudulently obtaining transportation, arson with disregard for human life, breaking and entering with intent, possessing a weapon dangerous to the public and possession of incendiary material. He was held for a bail hearing.
