I would hope that the citizens of Whitby and Oshawa will take note of three municipalities in Canada that will not allow the sale of cannabis, Richmond in British Columbia, and Richmond Hill and Markham, Ontario. What these three communities have in common is a significant and I would add powerful population of Chinese-born Canadians and immigrants.
I suspect that seared in their historical memory is a memory of two opium wars that were perpetrated by the British , the first from 1839-1842, ended by the Treaty of Nanking which ceded Hong Kong to Britain. Not satisfied by their gains a second opium war between 1856 to 1860 was started. A slippery slope is ahead of us and I suspect these communities have learned from the mistakes of history.
