A Whitby man is facing multiple charges in connection with an investigation into human trafficking.
On Friday, July 14, 2017 police received information about a female at an Oshawa motel who told a friend she had been kidnapped. Officers attended and located a 38-year-old female, who said she had willingly entered the sex trade last year.
In May 2017, the woman entered into an arrangement with a male who promised to help her in the sex trade in return for a portion of her profits. However, over the past several weeks, that relationship deteriorated and the male began taking a larger percentage of the money until it was 100 per cent. He began threatening her and assaulted her several times.
Further investigation led to an arrest warrant for the male. He was located while driving his vehicle in the Highway 115/401 area in the early morning of Saturday, July 15th.
A 31-year-old male is charged with: trafficking in persons; material benefit from trafficking in persons; obtaining sexual services for consideration; material benefit from sexual services; advertising another person’s sexual services; exercising control; recruiting a person to provide sexual services for consideration; and assault causing bodily harm.
He was held for a bail hearing.
