The Water Walkers are coming

Josephine Mandamin, seen here in 2010, will be walking through Oshawa as part of a walking journey from Quebec to Wisconsin to raise awareness of maintaining the safety of water.
Any day now, a group of walkers that have made their way from Quebec and are on their way to Wisconsin will pass through Oshawa.
They are part of a group known as Water Walkers United, and they are working to showcase just how important it is. The walk is led by Ojibwe elder Josephine Mandamin, who has staged similar walks over the past decade.
This journey started on June 23 in Matane, Quebec, and will conclude on or around Aug. 20 on Madeline Island in Wisconsin, approximately 300 kilometres north east of Minneapolis, Minnesota.
“The water is sick,” Mandamin says in a statement on the Water Walkers’ website. “People need to really fight for that water, to speak for that water, to love for that water.”
While it is uncertain exactly when Mandamin and the rest of the group will make their way through Oshawa – it’s estimated it could be anywhere from July 21 to July 23, depending on weather – donations can be made at any point during the trek at waterwalkersunited.com.
More details are available on the group’s website and Facebook page.
