Skaters compete in sectionals

Members of the Oshawa Skating Club (OSC) have taken its first strides on its way to the national championship.

From Nov. 6 to 8, a group of six OSC skaters travelled to Napanee to compete in the Eastern Ontario Sectionals.

Emma Cullen, 18 years old and born and raised in Oshawa, attends O’Neill C.V.I and is a dance major in the performing arts program. Cullen is also a senior ladies competitor and trains six days a week with coaches Tracey Wainman and Gregor Filipowski. Cullen is the 2014/2015 Eastern Ontario Senior Ladies Champion, and the 2014 Ontario Super Series Senior Ladies silver medalist. She has competed at the national championships as a novice woman, and her goal is to qualify for this year’s nationals as a senior.

Melanie Zavitski is 16-years-old, in Grade 11, and a novice ladies competitor. Zavitski trains six days a week with her coach Trinette Goarley. She is the 2014/2015 Eastern Ontario Pre-Novice Ladies bronze medalist, earning her a spot to compete at the 2014/2015 Skate Canada Challenge.

Megan Patterson is 13-years-old, is in Grade 8 and is a Juvenile U14 Ladies competitor. Patterson trains in Oshawa three days a week with her coach Sandra Madore. Patterson is the 2015 Eastern Ontario Pre-Juvenile U13 Champion and was the 2014 Eastern Ontario StarSkate Pre-Juvenile U11 bronze medalist, earning her a spot to compete at the 2014 Skate Ontario Provincial Championships.

Taylor Page is 12-years-old, in Grade 7, and also competes in Juvenile U14 Ladies. Page trains out of Oshawa 3 days a week with her coach Monica Johnston and is the 2015 Eastern Ontario Pre-Juvenile U13 bronze medalist.

Jake Lipton is 12-years-old, and a Pre-Juvenile U13 Mens competitor. Lipton trains five days a week. He is the 2015 Eastern Ontario StarSkate Pre-Juvenile U11 Mens bronze medalist, also earning a spot to compete at the 2015 Skate Ontario Provincial Championships.

Sarah Campbell is 11-years-old, in Grade 6, and a Pre-Juvenile U11 competitor. Campbell trains out of Oshawa three days a week with coach Johnston. Campbell is the 2015 Eastern Ontario StarSkate STAR 5 U11 bronze medalist, earning her a chance to compete at the 2015 Skate Ontario Provincial Championships.
