Remembrance Day: Celebrating through art

A local organization is looking to honour the men and women who fought for this country this Remembrance Day through art.
Pathwise Credit Union is calling on all the kids in Durham Region to participate in an art competition and drawing contest for Remembrance Day.
“We want to celebrate the men and women who bravely fought for our country and our people,” says Lindsay Temple, chief experience officer at Pathwise, noting many of their members are veterans or have relatives who are veterans, or are currently serving in the armed forces.
“We just want to take a minute to celebrate them,” she says.
The contest is for all children in Junior Kindergarten (JK) to Grade 12 and will be split into five age groups: JK to Grade 2, Grade 3 to 6, Grade 7 and 8, Grade 9 and 10, and Grade 11 and 12.
Group one, JK to Grade 2, will have a downloadable colouring page which can be found on the Pathwise website. The other age groups are being asked to submit their own drawings, 8.5” x 11” in size.
“Our hope is to tell the stories of these women and men and try to remember what they fought for, and to thank them for their sacrifices and what they did for our freedom. So one way of celebrating these heroes is by showing them what they mean to us,” Lindsey continues. “That’s why we’re calling out to the community, especially our young people, to express their thanks though visual art.”
There will be three winners in each category – first, second and third place. Winners will receive $100, $50, and $25, respectively.
Pathwise will also be donating $1,000 to the Royal Canadian Legion Oshawa branch “as a way of giving back.”
Due to COVID-19 restrictions, all submissions should be scanned and submitted online.
The contest deadline is Nov. 7. Winners will be announced on Nov. 10 at 10 a.m. via a ZoomCast on Facebook Live.
An exhibit of all the winners will be held online from Nov. 11 to Nov. 30.
