Oshawa names top firefighter

Firefighter

Capt. Mike Savoie, third from left, has been named Oshawa’s top firefighter. He is joined here by Mayor John Henry, wife Karen and Fire Chief Steve Meringer.

Capt. Mike Savoie is a good firefighter. In fact, he’s the best.

That’s according to the city, Oshawa Fire Services and the Durham A.M. Kiwania, which bestowed Savoie with the Firefighter of the Year Award.

Savoie has been with the fire department for a quarter century, joining the ranks in 1990. Since then, he has made his way through the ranks to his current status as captain, stationed at Fire Hall No. 2 on Simcoe Street South.

“Mike is well respected by his co-workers and has volunteered countless hours of time serving both Oshawa Fire Services and his association,” states Fire Chief Steve Meringer in a news release.

Several of Savoie’s accomplishments include painting a mural of the Oshawa Fire Services emblem at all five of the city’s fire stations and coaching with the Oshawa Minor Hockey Association.
