Lakeview Beach East, West safe for swimming
The Region of Durham says 11 of the region’s 14 beaches are safe for swimming, including Lakeview Beach East and West.
Other beaches that are open across the region include Beaverton Beach North, Bowmanville Beach East and West, Elgin Pond, Frenchman’s Bay East and West, Paradise Beach (formerly Pickering Beach), Thorah Centennial Park, and Whitby Beach.
Those that are posted and deemed unsafe for swimming due to elevated bacteria levels of E. coli are Beaverton Beach South, Kinsmen Beach, and Newcastle Beach Central.
Beaches are posted as unsafe for swimming when elevated levels of E. coli exceed the provincial standard of 200 E. coli per 100 mL of water.
The region conducts bacteriological water tests weekly throughout the summer to determine if regional beaches are safe for swimming.
The region also reminds residents not to swim in beach water for at least 48 hours after heavy rainfall as bacteria levels can increase due to run-off.
