Gens tie series against Niagara

By Chris Jones/The Oshawa Express

The Gens have returned home after losing two in Niagara, and were looking to finish out the two game homestand with a win.

Taking on the Niagara IceDogs in the second round of the playoffs, the Gens were looking to tie the series at two apiece before heading back to Niagara.

To start Game 4, the Gens played a physical game with both teams trading hits before Niagara’s Matthew Philip opened the scoring.

Down 1-0 early, Anthony Salinitri looked to change that as he was in the IceDogs end all alone and roofed a shot to tie the game.

The Gens were then on the powerplay when Giovanni Vallati took a point shot to beat Niagara goalie Stephen Dhillon to take the lead.

With his father in attendance after he was one of a group of former Generals there for the opening puck drop, Kyle MacLean would get a shorthanded 2-on-1 with Serron Noel. MacLean flicked a pass from Noel past Dhillon to add to the lead.
The IceDogs would add one more however, making it 3-2 at the end of a high scoring first period in which the Gens were outshot 17-9.

Only one goal was scored in the second period, and it came off the stick of Nando Eggenberger when he got a hold of the puck after a clearing attempt by Dhillon, and it bounced off an IceDogs defender.

It was 4-2 heading into the third period, and the IceDogs cut down the lead to one with a goal from Jason Robertson.

However, the Gens held on as Salinitri scored his second of the game, and Allan McShane would add one more to give the Gens a commanding 7-3 victory over the Niagara IceDogs.

All three stars of the game were Generals as MacLean was the first star after scoring a goal and an assist, Eggenberger was the second star after getting the game winning goal and Kyle Keyser was the third star after stopping 36 of 39 shots.

The Gens were outshot 39-26, but were able to capitalize on scoring opportunities by going 3-for-7 on the powerplay.

In earlier action the Gens took on the IceDogs at home for Game 3 of the series.

After a scoreless first where Oshawa outshot Niagara 18-9, the IceDogs broke the scoreless tie with a goal from Jason Robertson.

However, in the dying seconds of the period, Noel buried a rebound from in front of Dhillon to tie the game heading into the third.

The third period is when things took off for the Gens as Oshawa native Kyle Bollers took only 2:40 to deflect a puck past Dhillon to give the Gens the lead.

Oshawa didn’t look back from there as Noel would add another, and Brett Neumann would score as well, giving the Gens a 4-1 victory.

All three stars were Gens in Game 3 as well as Noel was the first star of the game after scoring two goals, Keyser was the second star after stopping 28 of 29 shots, and Bollers was the third star after scoring the game winner for Oshawa.

The Gens outshot the IceDogs 35-29, and went 2-for-4 on the powerplay.

Oshawa did not allow a single powerplay goal to the IceDogs while at home, and are looking to carry that same momentum as they go back to Niagara for Game 5 on Saturday, April 13.

The series will return to Oshawa on Monday, April 15 at the Tribute Communities Centre at 7:05 p.m. If Game 7 is necessary, it will be played in Niagara on Tuesday, April 16.
