Back-to-school traffic blitz results in over 1,600 tickets

More than 1,600 tickets were issued during a two-week traffic safety initiative around neighbourhood schools in Durham Region.

Durham Police initiated a zero-tolerance traffic enforcement campaign called In the Zone, which targeted school and community safety zones during the weeks of Sept. 7 to 11, and Sept. 14 to 18, 2020.

Over the two weeks, police issued 1,631 tickets for various driving offences in and around schools, which included 1,141 tickets for speeding.

Other tickets included stop sign violations, red light violations and distracted driving.

The goal of the annual campaign is to ensure high officer visibility and proactive enforcement in and around school zones during the first week back to school. During this year’s staggered school starts, the initiative covered the first two weeks.
