UOIT’s first female golfer hits the links

The UOIT golf team celebrates after a successful weekend on the links including the appearance of the program’s first female golfer, Alex Down, pictured here third from right.
The UOIT golf team looked a little different than the previous five seasons as Alex Down became the first female to represent the school on the links in program history.
“It is great to have Alex join the golf team,” said Scott Barker, manager of UOIT intercollegiate athletics.
Down has previous intercollegiate experience, having golfed with Durham College where she won an OCAA medal and took part in the CCAA national championship in 2012. Her opening weekend with the Ridgebacks saw her shoot a 96 at the Carleton Invitational and a 125 at the Queen’s Invitational.
MacKenzie Dasti had a great start to his season, finishing second overall in individual competition at the Carleton Invitational with a round of 72. The following day at Queen’s, he posted a round of 75 and finished in the top 15. The team finished with a total of 325.
Nick Dirk had the best score of any UOIT golfer at Queen’s as he shot a 74, landing a spot in the top 10. UOIT’s team total was 311.
The Ridgebacks’ next tournament is Sept. 26 when they take part in the York Invitational. Following that, UOIT will take on Durham College in the second running of the President’s Cup. This year’s event will be held at the Royal Ashburn Golf Club.
