UOIT Ridgebacks soccer, hockey schedules released

The schedules from UOIT’s soccer and hockey clubs have been released for the 2017-18 Ontario University Athletics (OUA) season.

UOIT’s men’s and women’s soccer teams will begin their regular seasons on Aug. 26 in the nation’s capital against Carleton University.

The men’s team will hold their home opener the following afternoon on Aug. 27 against the Queen’s Gaels. The women’s home opener comes on Saturday, Sept. 2 against Trent University.

UOIT’s women’s soccer team is coming off of their best season in program history. After finishing at the top of the OUA with a 13-2-1 record, the Ridgebacks won their first OUA gold medal in women’s soccer. At the U SPORTS championship in Nova Scotia, the Ridgebacks took the bronze medal.

Queen’s, who UOIT knocked off in the OUA gold medal game and U SPORTS bronze medal game, will meet the Ridgebacks again on Sept. 23 in Kingston, Ont.

A key match to mark off on the calendar is the annual Campus Cup against Durham College on Sept. 6 at Vaso’s Field.

With the exception of the Campus Cup and a men’s match against RMC on Wednesday, Oct. 11, all UOIT regular season matches this season will be played on a Saturday or Sunday.

The last home game of the regular season will take place on Oct. 15 with the women’s team playing Ottawa at and the men’s team taking on Carleton.

Regular season action wraps up a week later on Oct. 22 where both teams will travel to North Bay to face Nipissing University.

The UOIT Ridgebacks men’s and women’s hockey seasons is closer in sight with the release of the 2017-18 schedules as well.

With training camp beginning in September, the women’s team will play three exhibition games. The first two will be a pair of home-and-away games against the Carleton Ravens.

On Friday, Oct. 6, UOIT’s women’s squad will host the Toronto Furies of the Canadian Women’s Hockey League (CWHL).

The regular season will begin on home ice with a Saturday afternoon game on Oct. 14 against Queen’s University.

Notable games on the calendar include the School Day Game on Friday, Nov. 24 against the Toronto Varsity Blues, as well as the Grandview Kids Foundation Game on Saturday, Feb. 3 against the Laurier Golden Hawks.

The women’s team will look to improve on last season’s 6-3-9-6 record to make it back into the McCaw Cup Playoffs.

UOIT’s men’s program will play five exhibition games in September against Ryerson, Laurier, York and two versus Lakehead before beginning the regular season.

The regular season will begin on home ice on Oct. 13 against the Royal Military College of Canada.

Last season, UOIT had a very strong start to the season with a five-game winning streak and 12 wins in 18 games before the holiday break. The 16-11-1 record at the end of the regular season was enough to clinch a spot in the Queen’s Cup Playoffs once again.

After falling to Concordia in three games in the first round, the Ridgebacks men’s hockey team will get their first shot at revenge in Montreal on Friday, Nov. 3.

In the holidays, UOIT will have four consecutive back-to-back series with opponents starting with the Lakehead Thunderwolves visiting the Campus Ice Centre from Nov. 24-25. Other opponents in that stretch include UQTR (Dec. 1-2 at home), Queen’s (Jan. 5-6 on the road) and RMC (Jan. 12-13 on the road).

The regular season will wrap up in February as the men’s team closes out their season in Ottawa on Feb. 10, and the women’s team on Feb. 15 against the Ryerson Rams.

Schedules for the remaining OUA sports will be released in the coming weeks.
