Theft suspect arrested thanks to tips from the public

Durham police are crediting tips that it received from the public for identifying and later charging a suspect for a break and enter last month.

At approximately 4:40 a.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 19, surveillance video at a convenience store at Ritson Road South and Dean Avenue captured a male breaking through a glass door with a golf club and climbing inside. Once inside, the suspect is seen jumping over the counter and stealing a number of lottery tickets before jumping back over and falling. The suspect is then seen collecting the stolen items off the floor before fleeing the scene.

Police released photos and a video from the scene and, thanks to tips from the public, were able to identify a suspect and arrest him.

A 25-year-old male of Bloor Street East has been charged with break and enter, possession of stolen property under $5,000 and breaching probation in connection with this incident.
