Teachers federation supports NDP

For the first time in 10 years, union pulls backing from Liberal Party

Ontario Secondary School Teachers Federation (OSSTF) officials are urging voters in Durham Region to support their local NDP candidates in the June 7 provincial election.

Speaking at the local OSSTF office in Whitby, president Harvey Bischof and Lamia Sabbagh, president of local District 13, threw their support behind NDP candidates Joel Usher in Durham and Jennifer French in Oshawa.

“As an incumbent MPP, Jennifer French hasbeen a tireless advocate for her constituents, and we believe Joel (is) ready to do the same in (the Durham ridings),” says Sabbagh. “We need MPPs who are vocal supporters of a strong public education system that all Ontarians can rely on, and we are confident our members will support their NDP candidates on election day.”

The endorsement marks the first time in more than a decade that the OSSTF, the largest educators union,  has no backed the Liberal Party.
