It may be slightly ironic that a business with the word “ice” in its name would host a beach volleyball tournament.
But that is exactly what Canlan Ice Sports in Oshawa is doing on Saturday, Sept. 15 in support of Grandview Children’s Centre.
Canlan Ice Sports Oshawa is a leader in operations hockey, ringette, soccer and skating facilities.
However, what is unique about the city’s location, Tyler Stewart, sales and marketing manager explains, is the six beach volleyball courts it boasts.
It was last year while playing in a charity ball hockey tournament, Stewart met with staff from Grandview and learned more about the work they do.
“I said we’d love to bring this to our location, and maybe we can do beach volleyball, as it’s a little bit more recreational and universal,” he says.
Stewart says he’s delighted to support a charitable cause in the community he works and lives in.
“It’s great to be good corporate citizens. I like that it is located here in Oshawa, and supports an initiative that is right back here in our backyard.”
Registration is $300 per team, and there will be a recreational (six-on-six) division and competitive (four-on-four) division.
Each team is guaranteed three round-robin games and at least one playoff game.
It is an age of majority event, and co-ed teams are encouraged. In case of inclement weather, Sunday, Sept. 23 has been booked as an alternative date.
All proceeds will support Grandview Children’s Centre, which provides specialized programs, outpatient clinical treatment, and support to thousands of children and youth with specialized needs.

Brandy Reid, community engagement and fundraising coordinator for Grandview, says they are delighted to receive Canlan Ice Sports’ support.

“We are truly honoured that Canlan Ice Sports has selected Grandview Kids as their charity of choice for this volleyball tournament,” Reid says. “We truly appreciate their friendship and support, and we look forward to this fun-filled event.”
