Transit drivers who have had impeccable safety records were given a moment of acknowledgement at the latest regional council meeting.

The Durham Region Transit Commission (DRTC) recognized drivers who have achieved five, 10, 15, 20 and 25 years of safe driving.

“Safety is not a matter of luck, it’s an attitude, it’s a culture,” commented DRTC general manager Vincent Patterson prior to the ceremony.

Patterson said every day DRTC operators travel a distance equal to the trip between Halifax and Vancouver.

“They deal with all ‘stop and go’ construction, all weather elements and traffic and road conditions,” Patterson added.

“They are always on the look out for people in need. We truly are a neighbourhood watch on wheels,” he said.

Seven drivers were recognized for five years of safe driving, 14 for 10 years, and two for 15 years.

Drivers Christine Banks, Cathy Clarry and Brian Steeves were all recognized for 20 years of safe driving while drivers Tim Bradley and Mike Mingay were recognized for 25 years.
