Spencer Roberts of Stouffville, who was named the top forward and top scorer at the RBC Cup, has committed to UOIT men’s hockey program for the 2017-18 season.
“Spencer’s another great addition,” said men’s hockey head coach Curtis Hodgins in a news release. “He’s a guy with a good track record and he had a great year with Cobourg [Cougars]. He’s the fourth Cougar we have, a team I saw play probably 25 times this year and each time I saw Spencer he just grew on me and his game is suited to our game here.”
Roberts, who is the nephew of former NHLer Gary Roberts, had a standout performance at the RBC Cup, posting four goals and three assists in four games to lead the tournament in scoring in the round robin.
He is the fourth Cougar to join the Ridgebacks recruiting class for the upcoming season, along with teammates Brennan Roy, Josh Maguire and Jesse Baird.
“I plan to bring hard work, dedication and the will to win to Ridgebacks hockey,” said Roberts.
Turning 21 in December, Roberts has four seasons of OJHL experience under his belt.
The six-foot left-winger spent his first three seasons with the Stouffville Spirit, being named team captain in his third year. In 2016-17, Roberts made the move to Cobourg where he would score 18 regular season goals.
In 180 career OJHL games, he has compiled 49 goals and 56 assists for 105 points, along with 272 penalty minutes.
On the road to the championship, Roberts posted eight points in 13 OJHL playoff games and nine points in six RBC Cup games.
With training camp scheduled for the beginning of September, Roberts is looking forward to getting back on the ice.
“It’s a great campus and I have heard nothing but great things about the program so I am excited,” said Roberts.
The 2017-18 schedule will be released this month.
