Durham police will once again have two deputy chiefs.

As of Aug. 2, Uday Jaswal, formerly a superintendent with Ottawa police, will be joining Chris Fernandes as a deputy chief for Durham police.

“I am honoured to be joining the Durham Regional Police Service and to have earned the confidence of the Police Services Board,” states Jaswal in a news release announcing his appointment.

“I am committed to supporting Chief (Paul) Martin and the members of the DRPS so that Durham remains a leader in community safety. I am eager to assume my new role in my new community and look forward to contributing my knowledge and abilities to position the DRPS for continued success.”

Jaswal has been with Ottawa’s police force since 1995, reaching the rank of superintendent in 2013. As well, Jaswal sits as the chair of the Youth Services Bureau, the largest youth-serving agency in the city.

The new deputy chief will be officially sworn into his new position at a public ceremony at regional headquarters on Tuesday, Aug. 2 at 10 a.m. Members of the public are invited to attend.
