Police helicopter tracks down carjacking suspect

A 33-year-old man is facing a number of charges after carjacking a vehicle in Oshawa and fleeing from police.

On Thursday, Nov. 28, at approximately 11:30 p.m., the victim was seated in her vehicle at a parking lot at Harmony Road North and Taunton Road East in Oshawa when an unknown suspect approached her and assaulted her before stealing her vehicle.

DRPS Communicators were able to get information quickly to the responding officers and the vehicle was located traveling eastbound towards Clarington.

Air1 assisted officers and found the stolen SUV at a gas station on Hwy 35/115 in Newcastle.

The suspect drove away and headed north to Concession Road 4 when officers initiated a pursuit. Police discontinued the pursuit for safety concerns.

Air1 continued to follow the vehicle and minutes later it was seen losing control on a turn and flipped over. The suspect exited the vehicle and continued to flee on foot.

K-9 officers and officers were able to set up a perimeter and the man was taken into custody.

The 33-year-old man of Cornish Hall Road in Cobourg, is facing a number of charges, including robbery, flight from police, dangerous operation, and six counts of operate conveyance while prohibited. He was held for a bail hearing.
