Paramedic assaulted by man in police custody

A 23-year-old Oshawa man faces charges after assaulting a paramedic this weekend.

On Saturday, Jan. 4 at approximately 9:45 p.m., Durham Regional Police officers responded to a call of a distraught male at home on Wilson Road South in Oshawa. The suspect was apprehended under the Mental Health Act after ingesting unknown drugs.

Police say the suspect was violent and verbally aggressive towards the officers and paramedics at the home. He was taken to Lakeridge Health in Oshawa and while he waited to be assessed, he continued to be disruptive and verbally abusive towards hospital staff, paramedics and police.

The paramedic was attempting to calm the male down when he was assaulted and suffered an injury that required medical treatment.

The accused from Oshawa was charged with assault cause bodily harm and uttering death threats. He was held for a mental health assessment.
