OPP warns against scam

Have you picked up a phone call, seeing the Ontario Provincial Police on the call display, only to be harassed and threatened by someone saying to send money or risk being deported? The OPP wants you to know that it was not them.

The provincial police force is warning potential victims about a scam that has seen people called from a number that appears to be from the OPP, and then claim to be from an immigration agency and demand money.

According to a news release, the number the calls have been attached to – (705) 329-6111 – is not a number that the OPP makes calls from, so if it shows up on your call display, it is a scam.

The OPP is warning residents to be wary of your call display, as numbers can be faked, and to also be suspicious if someone claiming to be from a government agency calls and seeks personal information.

If you have received any of these calls or something similar, please hang up and report it to police or the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre at 1-888-395-8501.
