New Year’s Day sees two stabbings

A stabbing in downtown Oshawa on New Year’s Day was just one of two that took place on the first day of 2017.

Shortly before 8 a.m. on Sunday, Jan. 1, police were called to the parking lot of the Tim Horton’s on Athol Street after receiving a call about an assault with a weapon. According to police, a 55-year-old male had been punched and stabbed.

When police arrived on scene, the suspect left, but was located a short distance away and arrested.

The victim sustained minor injuries.

A 29-year-old male of no fixed address is facing one count each of assault causing bodily harm, assault with a weapon, possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose, carrying a concealed weapon, assault to resist arrest, assaulting police and mischief property damage, along with two counts of uttering threats to cause death, in connection with this incident.

This was the second stabbing on New Year’s Day, with another taking place at approximately 2:30 a.m. in Ajax.

According to police, a 19-year-old Ajax male got into an altercation with an unknown male while waiting for a cab outside of the Subway restaurant at Kingston Road and Harwood Avenue. The victim, along with a friend, realized that the prior had been stabbed after getting into the taxi. The victim’s father called police after being dropped off at the victim’s house.

The suspect is this case is described as a white male standing approximately five feet and nine inches tall with a medium build. Police say he has short brown hair and was unshaven, and was last seen wearing a grey sweatshirt and black pants.
