New program to address workplace mental health
Canadian Mental Health Association Durham has announced a new program aimed at improving mental health in local places of work.
The Corporate and Workplace Education Program consists of custom-designed sessions surrounding mental health in the workplace.
CMHA Durham is offering the program to organizations across Durham Region.
The program consists of a range of courses designed to provide skills for leadership to support staff, as well as to provide skills to staff supporting clients, patients, and consumers.
Courses available through the program include:
– Mental Distress: Recognition and Response, in which participants learn about the difference between mental health and mental illness, as well the surrounding stigmas. Participants also learn about a variety of mental illnesses, including common symptoms and presentation and simple verbal de-escalation techniques and communication strategies
– Mental Health Works is an evidence-based, solutions-focused program with four modules centered on health and mental health, mood, depression, stress, anxiety, and psychological safety at work
– Psychological health and safety advisors are available to support workplaces in adhering to Canada’s Standard for Psychological Health and Safety in the Workplace
The program also includes in-depth certificate training, including:
– Applied Suicide Intervention Training, a two-day workshop for individuals who want to increase their confidence in helping to prevent the immediate risk of suicide
– Living Life to the Full is an eight-session, 12-hour, evidence-based mental health promotion course designed to help individuals deal with everyday challenges and improve quality of life
– Suicide Alertness for Everyone is a three-hour workshop which alerts individuals of warning signs that may indicate a risk of suicide
– Mental Health First Aid, is a two-day course providing individuals with the skills necessary to help someone who may be developing a mental health program or experiencing a mental health case
The Corporate and Workplace Education Program is offered in collaboration with the Canadian Mental Health Association Haliburton, Kawartha, and Pine Ridge.
