New member joins police board

Patrice Barnes has joined the Durham Region Police Services Board as the provincial appointee for a three-year term.

“I am honoured to have the opportunity to serve the community as a member of the Police Services Board,” said Barnes. “I look forward to contributing to the board’s governance and oversight of the Durham Regional Police Service and to representing the interests of our citizens in keeping our community safe.”

“Ms. Barnes’ community leadership experience will be a valuable asset to the board,” said board chair and Pickering Councillor Kevin Ashe. “She is recognized for her commitment to diversity, inclusion and innovation and we look forward to her contributions to advance our policing and community safety objectives.”

Barnes was elected to the Durham District School Board to represent Ajax in 2014 and reelected in 2018.

In this role, Barnes has served as co-chair of the Diversity Steering Committee, and Special Education Committee, vice chair of the Board of Trustees and chair of the Education Finance Committee.

She has also represented DDSB as a director with the Ontario Public School Board Association.

She is actively involved in her community and has volunteered and been a part of many events and committees representing her community.

Barnes was born and raised in Jamaica and immigrated to Canada when she was 18.
