A growing number of people in the Oshawa area are receiving employment insurance payments from the government, according to new numbers from Statistics Canada.
This past February, there were approximately 8,500 people in the Oshawa census metropolitan area – which also includes Whitby and Clarington – receiving employment benefits, up from 8,150 the month before. This also marked an increase over the year before, with 7,890 receiving benefits in February 2015.
The number was up nationally as well, going to 966,510 in February from 948,900 in January. There were 921,740 people receiving employment benefits across the country in February 2015.
Provincially, however, the number of people on employment benefits went down compared to the year before, dropping to 282,090 from 286,170.
According to Statistics Canada, the rise in the Oshawa area was the highest in the province, going up 10.9 per cent.
