Legionaires finish fourth in Ray Carter Cup

The Oshawa 15U Legionaires finished fourth in this weekend’s Ray Carter Cup Championships. Team Ontario eventually won the gold medal.

The top 15U baseball players in the country converged in Oshawa this past weekend.

The Baseball Canada 2018 15U Boys Ray Carter Cup Championships were held in the city between Aug. 22 and Aug. 26

The Oshawa 15U Legionaires of the Elite Baseball League of Ontario served as the hosts.

They got off to a great start with a 7-2 victory over Quebec in a game held right after the opening ceremonies.

Catcher Colin Cymbalista lead the way with two runs batted in, and while Turner Spoljeric added five strikeouts.

On Friday, Aug. 24, the Oshawa team split two games, losing 2-0 to Ontario and then picking up a 11-2 blow out win against Prince Edward Island.

Griffin McMillan had three hits and two RBIs in the victory.

On Saturday, Aug. 25, British Columbia picked up a 3-2 win over Oshawa, but the host team rebounded with a 9-2 victory over New Brunswick to win the quarter finals.

Pitcher Ryan Mattes put together a dominating performance, racking up nine strikeouts.

Team Ontario proved again to be a thorn in the side of Oshawa, picking up another shutout victory.

In the bronze medal game, Oshawa would once again fall to British Columbia 5-2 to finish off the podium for the tournament.

Ontario would win the tournament defeating Saskatchewan in the finals.
