Owen McDade was drafted by the Oshawa Generals in the third round of the 2012 OHL Priority Draft. Prior to being drafted he played for the Pembroke Lumber Kings of the CCHL where he put up 25 points in 53 games.

After played six games with the Generals in 2012-2013, McDade earned a spot on the Generals roster for the 2013-2014 season. He played in 44 games that season recording one goal and three assists. McDade scored his first OHL goal, the opening goal, in a 6-5 shootout loss to the Belleville Bulls on March 3.

Following the 2013-2014 season McDade was reassigned to the Lumber Kings of the CCHL, where he saw much more ice time. McDade put up 24 points in 36 games, as well as 10 points in 19 playoff games for the Lumber Kings during the 2014-2015 season.
