Children under 12 will ride Durham Transit for free when accompanied by a fare paying passenger as of May.
Durham Regional Transit will also be offering two-for-one monthly passes for youth between the ages of 13 and 19.
Oshawa Ward 5 regional councillors Brian Nicholson made the request to extend free ridership to children under 12 during regional council’s final budget deliberations.
“I think it was a change that was long overdue. It’s going to provide some real relief,” he told The Oshawa Express.
Nicholson said he heard from many residents during his campaign the cost of public transportation was becoming a barrier for them to make recreational trips, getting to doctor’s appointments or students attending school.
In fact, Nicholson is pushing for a similar offer for seniors.
“Our seniors centre (in Oshawa) has a wonderful $2 lunch they offer but for many seniors it’s not a $2 meal, it’s a $10 meal,” he said. “To get to the facility and get home again, it is costly if they have to use transit, and for some of them it’s the only option they have.”
