Durham Region EMS gets new name

Durham Region EMS will now be known as the Region of Durham Paramedic Services.

The name change is aimed to better reflect the services provided by the region’s paramedics.

“This change in name recognizes the significant contribution paramedics provide to ensure the well-being of the residents of Durham Region. It is also consistent with what is occurring in other paramedic services throughout Ontario,” says Regional Chair Roger Anderson in a news release. “The medical services provided by our paramedics are an integral component of the overall health care system, and the Region of Durham Paramedic Services is one of the best service providers in Ontario with an exemplary performance record.”

The name change will be phased in over the next few years and will be reflected on both paramedics’ uniforms and the service’s vehicles. The phasing in of the new name will incur no additional costs to the service.

Richard Armstrong, chief of the Region of Durham Paramedic Services, says he is pleased with the name change.

“This new name not only more appropriately reflects the scope of our services, but also encompasses future expansion of paramedic services into non-emergency care, such as community paramedicine,” he states.

The Region of Durham Paramedic Services is one of the largest paramedic services in Ontario and is the sole certified ambulance operator for the region. The service consists of a team of advanced care and primary care paramedics, operating out of 10 paramedic stations throughout the region.
