Date rape drug chemicals seized at border

An Oshawa man is facing several charges after enough chemicals to make thousands of doses of date rape drugs were seized at the border.

On Wednesday, Nov. 25, Canada Border Services Agency officers intercepted a couriered shipment containing gamma-butyrolactone, better known as GBL. GBL is a precursor chemical and is used in the production of gamma-hydroxybutyrate (GHB), a date rape drug.

The seized GBL was enough to produce 264 litres of GHB, or approximately 53,000 individual doses with a street value of $527,000.

On Wednesday, Dec. 2, Toronto police arrested one of the alleged importers and intended recipients. Two more people were arrested the following day.

A 30-year-old male of Oshawa has been charged with two counts of possession for the purpose of trafficking, one count of possession of proceeds of property obtained by crime, one count of failing to comply with a recognizance and one count of unauthorized possession of a prohibited weapon.
