A man remains alive today thanks to the actions of one Durham police officer.
At approximately 7 a.m. on Sunday, Nov. 6, security at Lakeridge Health’s Oshawa hospital called police to assist with a male who had gotten onto the roof of the parking garage and was standing at its edge.
According to police, a sergeant responding to the scene was able to climb up on to the roof and spoke with the distraught male. The officer was able to develop a rapport with the male, inching his way closer. However, at one point, the male got agitated, at which point the officer made the decision to lunge in his direction, tackling him away from the edge and preventing a 130-foot fall.
The male was apprehended under the Mental Health Act and taken into the hospital for treatment.
The sergeant is set to be commended for his actions.
