City studies sandwich board signs for business owners

City staff will be reporting to council on the results of a three year sandwich board sign pilot project, and are asking for public input.

From April 1, 2017 to April 1, 2020 the City of Oshawa ran the three year pilot project to permit sandwich board signs in the Central Business District.

The pilot found that sandwich board signs are a simple and affordable tool for business owners to advertise their businesses, particularly during the summer season, in the Central Business District.

However, under current City of Oshawa and Region of Durham by-laws regulating temporary signs, business owners in the Central Business District are not permitted to erect sandwich board signs within the road allowance (which includes boulevards and sidewalks) outside of their place of business.

During the pilot, sandwich board signs were permitted on the boulevard/sidewalk portion of city and regional road allowances if the business owner obtained a sign permit sticker from the city.

As part of the sign permit sticker process, business owners were required to fill out an application form.

The application form included details regarding the specifications for sandwich board signs permitted under the pilot project such as sign construction, size and location. Business owners were also required to provide the city with appropriate proof of insurance documents.

The sign permit sticker was valid for one year with the intention that it be renewed annually through the submission of a new application each year.

City staff will be reporting to city council on the results of the three year pilot project and are looking to collect input from business owners within the

Central Business District regarding the pilot project through a survey.
