City hiring three crossing guards for new schools

By Dave Flaherty/The Oshawa Express

The city will hire three new crossing guards for schools opening during the 2019-2020 school year.

Two permanent guards will be placed at crossings near Elise MacGill Public School at 800 Greenhill Avenue, which is set to open in September 2019.

The crossing guards will be respectively positioned at Greenhill Avenue and Clearbrook Drive, and Greenhill Avenue and Wilson Road South.

The cost for the hiring will be $7,701 for the remainder of 2019, and $19,074 for 2020.

Another crossing guard will be hired for St. Anne Catholic Elementary School, scheduled to open in January 2020 at 2465 Bridle Road.

Staff recommend placing the guard on Bridle Road, between Gulfstream Avenue and Pimilco Drive.

As the school is currently under construction, staff note they will monitor the area, and report back to committee if any additional school crossings are required.

The cost for the St. Anne crossing guard is estimated to be $5,722 within the 2020 budget.

The city will see approximately $15,259 in savings when two existing crossing guard positions at Father Joseph Venni Catholic Elementary School are cleared when it closes in February 2020.
