The value of building permits in the Oshawa area for June was less than half what it was a year earlier.
According to new numbers from Statistics Canada, the Oshawa census metropolitan area – which also includes Whitby and Clarington – saw 190 residential building permits valued at approximately $55.7 million issued in June. This is a decrease of approximately 65 per cent from the year before, when 645 residential build permits valued at approximately $159.3 million were issued.
The Oshawa area saw a month-to-month decrease as well, with May 2016 seeing 339 residential building permits valued at just under $75 million being issued.
The majority of June’s permits were for singles – 80 – and row houses – 85.
Across the country, the number and value of residential building permits were down, going to 17,453 permits valued at $4.17 billion in June from 18,805 permits valued at $4.27 billion the month before.
The June numbers were also a decrease from the year before, with June 2015 seeing 20,068 residential building permits valued at $4.62 billion.
