Blood donors needed this Easter weekend

Dear Editor,

This Easter long weekend, I’d like to urge the residents of Oshawa and Durham Region to come and join us at the Oshawa Blood Donor Centre at 1300 Harmony Rd. North.

While many Canadians are on the hunt for the Easter Bunny, Canadian Blood Services – Oshawa is on the hunt for more donors. We’re open over the long weekend and need 230 donors to meet the growing demand for blood.  Donations often decrease around the long weekend as regular donors are away or busy with friends and family.

While all blood types are needed, O-negative blood is in particular demand by hospitals because it is the only type compatible with all other blood types. O-negative blood is used in the most critical situations. When seconds count and somebody’s life is on the line, there’s no time to check their blood type. In an emergency, all patients can receive O-negative blood.

One in two Canadians is eligible to give blood; however, last year only one in 60 eligible people actually donated.

Canadian Blood Services’ clinic in Oshawa operates every Monday and Tuesday from 3  to 7 p.m., Wednesday from 10 a.m to 2 p.m., Thursday 4 to 8 p.m., Friday 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. and Saturday to 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. We will be open and operating on regular hours Friday thru Monday of the long weekend.

Please make an appointment to give blood by calling 1-888 2DONATE (236-6283), by downloading the GiveBlood APP, or visiting blood.ca.

Somewhere, a patient and their family will be thankful!

Sincerely,

Jennifer Mathieu
