The weather outside might be feeling warmer than usual, but that doesn’t mean that winter is gone for good. And with winter, unfortunately, comes door-to-door snow removal scams.
Durham police are warning residents to be on the lookout for fraudulent snow removal companies, which have been found to be in operation in the area for the last couple of winters and are expected to return.
These scams typically target the elderly, and will likely request hefty deposit fees. They may also present contracts to sign with fine print details of how much snow is required to be on the ground before they remove it.
In many cases, after these contracts are signed and deposits collected, the snow removal company never returns.
Durham police are advising residents to never pay in full for these services, insist the contractor provide references and follow up, check the company online, create a contract yourself and finally if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is.
If you suspect you have been a victim of a fraudulent contractor please contact the DRPS Major Fraud Organized Crime Section at 1-888-579-1520, ext. 5702.
