Wishing Oshawa the best this Canada Day

Dear Editor,

It’s hard to believe that a year has passed since we celebrated Canada`s sesquicentennial! What an amazing yearlong celebration of all things Canadian. We saw activities from coast to coast to coast that drew people together as a nation. Whether you attended a community fair, your local church or a favourite community organization, Canadian pride surrounded you.

Here in Oshawa, I had the privilege of recognizing those who have built our great community with Canada 150 Volunteer Medals. I attended the meetings of many local organizations so that we could surprise their longtime volunteers with some well-deserved recognition.

One of my absolute favourite presentations was at Legion Branch 43. We ended up delaying the ceremony because most of the volunteers were hard at work in the kitchen and refused to come out until their work was complete. That’s the kind of hardworking, talented and dedicated volunteers we are blessed with in Oshawa.

Like Oshawa, Canada has been fortunate to have been led by visionaries, like our First Prime Minister, Sir John A. MacDonald. These brilliant men and women, supported by volunteers in their communities set out to make Canada the prosperous and free nation we enjoy today.

There is no doubt that July 1st is an important date to all Canadians. It affords all of us the opportunity to come together with our community in celebration of one thing we all have in common: a love for Canada.

I would like to thank all the volunteers, staff, community organizations, and local businesses who work so hard to make Canada Day in Oshawa so special. We are truly a better a community because of the time and energy you invest. On behalf of my staff, my family and myself I extend my best wishes to everyone for a safe, fun, and memorable Canada Day 2018!

Sincerely,

Colin Carrie
