What happened with Lutczyk?

The saga of Mr. Robert Lutczyk has been of interest to me and many of my friends. I never met Mr. Lutczyk – I only knew him as former city councillor. By following the entire procedure, it become obvious to us that the legal system, the police, guards at CCEC and the media were determined to make things as difficult as possible for Mr. Lutczyk.

It seems it was not so much as to what he did as it was whom he did it to. It took them three years to get him to plead guilty instead of having a full trial and what it might reveal. Kidnapping is a crime and should be punished. I wonder what would cause an intelligent person to commit such a crime. As there was no one killed or seriously injured, the eight-year sentence is the same as given to pimp Daryn Leung, who faced multiple charges for the horrible crimes he committed.
