United Way Durham recently held its annual Ride4UnitedWay and it was a big success with more than 100 cyclists.
United Way Durham’s Chief Possibility Officer Robert Howard says the company raised approximately $15,000 for COVID-19 relief.
“We had a great day with a great turnout,” he says. “I think we had about 100 riders.”
Residents were invited to break out their bikes for one last ride this fall and do one of three courses all beginning at St. Bridget Catholic School, 200 Carnwith Dr. W., in Whitby.
This year funds were raised for COVID-19 relief, and went to the COVID-19 Relief and Recovery Fund in Durham Region.
He says they received positive feedback from riders who enjoyed the fact they could go for a ride and raise money for charity at the same time.
Howard notes those interested are still able to donate, as the system is still open at www.ride4unitedway.com.
“We went to bed at the end of the race with about $12,000, and subsequently we’ve gotten about $2,200,” he says.
He isn’t sure exactly when they will stop accepting donations, but expects it to be some time soon.
However, while Howard is proud of the work they’ve done during Ride4UnitedWay, he says they are now focused on the Meals and Trees Initiative.
This initiative sees United Way and General Motors teaming up to combat two major global issues: hunger and climate change.
Through Oct. 14, for every $20 donated to the Meals and Trees campaign, two meals will be provided to those in need, and a tree will be planted.
Those who participate can pick up their trees on Oct. 17 at any participating GM dealership.
