The little things that make me sad

Bill FoxBy Bill Fox/Columnist

In my last column, I wrote about the little things that make me happy, so this week it seems only right to mention the little things that make me sad.

-Young people smoking, and older people trying to stop and failing.

-Street people asking for money. It’s not that they are bothering me, as much as the fact that they are in that circumstance.

-People who, through no fault of their own, have mental health issues.

-Folks who are not open minded and so judgemental. The example coming to mind is the gentleman shown recently on CBC TV who was calling reporters “pieces of —-(excrement)”…and insinuating that they and everyone, cheats on their taxes…sad perspective.

-When I hear of someone being diagnosed with cancer, my younger brother being one. Another is a friend who, after many years, finally met his soul partner and after only two and a half years of marriage, she is diagnosed with cancer.

-Hearing of children being mistreated.

-How much I depend on my computer and how upset I get when my Internet goes down. It’s sad that I have become so dependent on modern technology.

-When I don’t get a Skype or face-time from our son and his family out west for a few weeks…especially seeing those granddaughters!

-Donald Trump’s perspective on so many things, and the fact he is still so popular.

-Seeing children ill.

-Realizing that there is so much unemployment amongst so many deserving youth, while we outsource jobs to other countries.

-Greed in all its aspects and seeing the trend in Canada that the rich are getting richer and the poor are getting poorer.

-The Leafs!

-People who seem so obsessed with their appearance, they forget their inside beauty.

-When my second son, who works for World Vision, goes to see the work that World Vision is doing and relates the circumstances that some youngsters are in, his stories make me sad.

-Seeing the same people over and over and they never smile.

-A student I had in my class for only a month or so kept skipping class and then committed suicide. That was many years ago, but I’m still sad that I did not see the signs, and was not able to help her.

-Racism, ageism and all sorts of prejudice make me sad…yet, I have to admit that when I see someone with lots of tattoos and body piercings and spiked hair, it saddens me that I cannot look beyond the exterior and I realize I’m also prejudiced.

-The quality of most of the TV shows today.

-The proliferation of pornography, especially when it is so easily accessible to young developing minds.

-When a store holding a sale, doesn’t have my size, or what’s worse they don’t make my size!

-Polluted water.

-Bottled water and the fact that companies take our water, bottle it and sell it back to us, making a huge profit, and sadly we keep buying it.

-Rain when it puts a damper on a planned outside activity like a wedding.

-The lack or rain and ensuing drought in California, that I saw first hand while visiting with my brother.

-People with no meaningful purpose in their lives other than committing crimes.

-Negative advertising of any kind.

Sadly, I know I have missed a lot of things that make me sad. pPrhaps you can add to my list, but if I get no emails at bdeefox@hotmail.com, I will be disappointed and, dare I say, sad!
