Stolen credit card used for gift cards

Two Toronto men are facing several charges after Durham police were notified a stolen credit card had been used to purchase thousands of dollars in gift cards.

On Thursday, Sept. 24, an order for gift cards from Sears Canada was placed, with instructions to deliver to cards to an address in Oshawa. The Major Fraud Unit was contacted as the credit card used to pay for the cards hadn’t been authorized.

The gift cards, declined at the Oshawa home, were sent to the delivery service depot in Toronto. There, two suspects were seen arriving in the car, with one presenting falsified identification in order to claim the gift cards.

Police stopped the car as it left the depot.

The gift cards totaled $18,000, but were never activated once the police investigation was started.

A 38-year-old male of Islington Avenue in Toronto and a 33-year-old male of Wilson Avenue in Toronto have been been charged with fraud over $5,000, possession of stolen property over $5,000, unauthorized use of credit card data and possession of identity information.

The 38-year-old male was also charged with using a forged document.

Anyone with further information on this investigation is asked to call Det. Const. Hoover at 1-888-579-1520, ext. 5352.
