SIU investigating after man killed by vehicle on Highway 115

The Special Investigations Unit has been called in after a shoplifting suspect was killed by a vehicle on Highway 115.

Police were called to the Home Depot on Harmony Road North and Taunton Road in Oshawa at approximately 5:20 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 17 for a shoplifting call. According to police, two male suspects were identified in connection with the theft of power tools and had been seen speeding away from the scene.

Police later located the vehicle heading east on Taunton toward Highway 115. When officers arrived to arrest the two suspects, one of them was hit by a southbound vehicle on Highway 115.

As a member of the public was killed during a police action, the SIU has been called in to investigate. As the collision occurred on Highway 115, OPP is investigating as it has jurisdiction there.

A 26-year-old Peterborough man has been charged with theft under $5,000, possession of property obtained by crime and driving a motor vehicle while under suspension in connection with the shoplifting incident.
