Recycle your old batteries

When it comes to used or unwanted batteries, the trash can is not an option.

With up to 92 per cent of battery components reusable or recoverable, the Region of Durham is asking residents to recycle batteries they no longer have use for.

Curbside battery collection will be available to all residents who receive collection services during the week of April 16.

Recycling batteries helps to prevent mercury, cadmium and other heavy metals from entering the environment.

According to a regional media release, more than 178,000 kg of batteries have been diverted from the waste stream since 2012.

Residents received two orange labels in their 2017-18 waste management calendar. Printable versions of the labels can be found at durham.ca/battery

The orange label should be affixed to a clear, sealable plastic bag containing batteries, which should be placed on top of paper Blue Boxes on collection days during the week of April 16.
