Province announces math strategy funding

The provincial government has announced a $55 million investment to strengthen math skills for students.

Whitby MPP Lorne Coe recently announced a total of $1.3375 million will land in Durham Region as part of the four-year math strategy, focused on fundamental math concepts and skills.

According to Minister of Education Stephen Lecce, the strategy will ensure “students are prepared in the classroom and in their future, teachers are confident and capable in teaching math, and parents and families are confident and equipped to support their kids.”

“We are listening to parents and educators. Ontario students need greater support to strengthen their math skills to achieve success in school and into their careers,” Lecce said in a media release. “This investment provides our young people with access to the skills they need to enter the workforce, and further underscores our government’s focus on STEM in the classroom.”

The Ford government also announced $6 million for summer math initiatives.

Also receiving funding is an online resource called Math at Home.

The resource aims to support student learning, mitigate against summer learning loss and provide parents opportunities to prepare their child for success in math, the government media release states.
