Police are warning the public to be on alert after a male delivering bogus packages scammed eight businesses.
Since early September, a male posing as a courier has scammed businesses in Oshawa, Whitby, Pickering and Port Perry. According to police, the business – typically a restaurant – receives a call from a male posing as a customer who is expecting a package to be delivered before he arrives for his reservation, and asks the business to cover the delivery charge. Once the business accepts the proposition, the suspect, now dressed as a courier, would arrive and deliver a package, requesting payment of approximately $200. The original customer would never arrive, with the boxes later found to contain old magazines.
Similar frauds have been reported in Toronto.
The suspect is described as a white male between 45 and 55 years old with long, dark hair in a ponytail.
